A More Sustainable Pet Home Starts With Buying Less, But Better

Sustainable pet care doesn't have to mean replacing everything you already own with products labelled “eco”.

In fact, one of the simplest places to start is the opposite: use what you have for longer.

The Australian Government recommends considering durability, reusability, repairability and recyclability before buying something new. That thinking applies just as well to pet products. A durable toy that survives months of play may make more sense than repeatedly replacing cheap ones. The same applies to bowls, grooming tools, bedding and electronic accessories.

When you are choosing something new, look beyond the front of the packaging. Ask whether parts can be replaced, whether the product can be cleaned properly, what materials it uses and how you would eventually dispose of it.

This becomes especially important as pet care becomes more tech-forward.

Australia generated around 511,000 tonnes of e-waste in 2019, and the Australian Government projects that figure could approach 657,000 tonnes by 2030. Pet electronics are only a small part of that much larger issue, but chargers, batteries and electronic pet devices still deserve responsible disposal.

Most importantly, batteries and electronics shouldn't simply go into your household recycling bin. The Australian Government recommends using dedicated collection services, local council facilities or programs such as battery recycling drop-off schemes.

Sustainable pet ownership can therefore be surprisingly simple:

Choose products you'll keep. Maintain them properly. Replace parts rather than whole products where possible. Reuse what you can. Dispose of electronics responsibly.
